A lot of people reference TMJwhen discussing TMD. Probably because the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the hinge joint that connects the lower jaw to the temporal bone of the skull. Temporomandibular Disorder (TMD) occurs as a result of problems with the jaw, jaw joint and surrounding facial muscles that control chewing and moving the jaw. 1

Common causes of TMD:
• Stress
• Excessive gum chewing
• Jaw clenching/teeth grinding
• Poor tooth arrangement/alignment

Common TMD Symptoms:
• Jaw pain

• Jaw does not open as far as it once did/should
• Jaw locks open or cannot shut properly
• Jaw muscle pain
• Headaches
